During our Community Service Term, students will be divided into nine groups to explore local, national, and global issues while researching organizations dedicated to addressing, changing, or preventing these challenges. Each group will work under a teacher to investigate the issue, the organization, and how we can contribute. Students will create posters to showcase their findings and produce a short video to share on social media, recognizing that spreading knowledge is the first step toward support.
At the conclusion of the term, we will host a Gift of Giving Event, where students will have numerous opportunities to give back to the community, including:
Allyhoo: Cutting out patterns to create stuffed animals for children’s hospitals.
The Sandwich Project MN: Preparing sandwiches for delivery to a local food bank in Minneapolis.
Humane Society: Coloring cat toys.
Children’s Hospital: Making fleece blankets (cutting, tying, and folding).
Foodbank: Creating a Birthday Box.
Little Free Libraries: Assisting in building and decorating five Little Free Libraries to be placed throughout the community.
Good in the Hood: Donating gently used shoes to the Shoe Truck, which provides shoes to those in need and a week’s worth of meals, or bringing in non-perishable food items.
A Book of My Own: Contributing nearly new children’s books to be gifted to local children, helping them build a home library.
Walk-a-thon: Raising funds for the nine different organizations by securing sponsors for each student as they commit to walking a certain number of laps.
